How Many Baby Clothes Do You Really Need?
A Guide for New Parents
Welcoming a new baby into the world is exciting, heartwarming, and—let’s face it—a little overwhelming, especially when it comes to figuring out what clothes you actually need. Do you really need 20 bodysuits, or will three do the trick? What about hats, socks, or those tiny adorable booties? At The Thrifting Den, we’re here to simplify things for you and show you that you don't really need as much as you think you do!
The Essential Wardrobe:
Keep It Simple, Keep It Smart
Babies grow faster than you can say “nappy change,” so it’s important to stock up wisely. It's also important to stick to natural fibres when dressing your babe so choose fabrics like cotton, linen and merino. And if you're worried about the washing catching up on you, don't worry, just grab a couple of extras if need be.
Here’s what we recommend for your baby’s wardrobe from newborn to 3 months:
6 - 8 Bodysuits
Whether it’s a hot summer day or a cool winter morning, bodysuits are your go-to. Short sleeves for summer, long sleeves for winter—either way, they’re perfect for layering or wearing on their own. Enveloped necklines are great for those 'poonamis' so you can pull the bodysuit down instead of over bubs head.
Shop Bodysuits3 - 5 Rompers or Onesies
Wether you call these onesies or rompers they are the MVP of baby clothing. Ideal for sleep, play, and everything in between, they're easy to put on, easy to take off. Zip onesies are highly recommended for sleepwear as no one wants to be fumbling around with domes or buttons during those 2am wake ups!
Shop Rompers & Onesies3 - 4 Singlets or Singletsuits
These are great for layering, especially in cooler weather and wether you choose plain singlets or singletsuits with domes is purley by preference. Go for merino wool in winter to keep your little one snug as a bug and breathable.
Shop Bodysuits2 - 3 Pants or Leggings
You may not need as many pants as you think as you'll probably find you'll keep bub in onesies most of the time! Footed pants are perfect for winter, keeping those tiny toes warm. Footless styles are great for warmer days and give a bit more room to grow.
Shop Pants & Leggings2 Cardigans
One cotton for those breezy summer evenings, and one wool or merino for those crisp winter mornings. Cardigans are perfect for when you're taking bub for a stroll to ensure they're kept nice and snug and layered away from the elements.
Shop BodysuitsAccessories
2 hats! One cotton hat for summer and one merino hat for winter will do the trick. 2 - 3 pairs of socks & 2 pairs of booties! Remember bub won't be walking for a while so they won't get dirty very often. Pick cotton for summer and merino for winter.
Shop AccessoriesAdorable Outfits
This one's really up to you! Those adorable outfits that are so so cute, may not be that practical for everyday wear. But who can resist things like cute little dresses with matching bloomers and head bands and adorable overalls (make sure they've got leg domes!) - goodness knows not many of us can!
